The Tate Britain:
“The Virtual Wing”
The Tate Britain Virtual Wing was a collaboration with Facebook (Meta) that used augmented reality (AR) via Instagram to bring classic artworks to life. Visitors used smartphones to unlock animations, sound, and hidden narratives, deepening engagement with artists like John Singer Sargent.
Technology: Created using Facebook’s Spark AR platform and developed in partnership with The Mill
The Experience: Visitors in the gallery used their Instagram cameras to scan specific paintings, activating digital overlays—such as the flowers in Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose moving, or a cat jumping out of a Turner painting.
Goal: To tell the "Untold Stories" behind paintings, highlighting narratives that traditional museum curation could not show, such as hidden history or the emotional depth of characters in portraits.
Artworks: The interactive experience featured eight, including Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, The Cholmondeley Ladies, and Head of a Man.
This project was a pioneering example of using social media and mobile AR to create a "digital layer" over traditional physical art spaces, aiming for higher visitor interaction and curiosity
